Cold weather workwear & PPE: the buyer's guide

Cold injuries, slips on ice, and reduced dexterity are the three biggest winter risks on a UK site. Getting workwear right is cheaper than a single lost-time incident.

Layer the workforce, don't just buy thicker coats

A three-layer system keeps workers warm without overheating when they exert themselves. Sweat that can't escape becomes ice when activity drops.

  • Base layer: moisture-wicking polyester or merino — never cotton.
  • Mid layer: fleece or softshell for insulation.
  • Outer layer: waterproof, breathable, hi-vis where required (EN471 / EN20471 class 2 or 3).

Gloves: read the EN511 rating

EN511 rates gloves on convective cold, contact cold and water permeability — each scored 0–4. For UK winter outdoor work, look for 2-2-X minimum; for handling cold metal or refrigerated stock, target 2-3-X or higher.

Safety footwear for winter

A standard S3 boot is not automatically warm. Look for the CI marking (cold insulation) and a deep aggressive tread. Composite toe caps stay closer to body temperature than steel.

Hi-vis matters more in winter

Daylight hours shrink, rain and fog cut visibility. Step hi-vis up one class from your summer spec, and make sure reflective bands aren't worn out — they degrade with washing.
